Irresistible Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Ingredients

For the Cheese Sticks:

  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks (or a block of mozzarella, cut into sticks)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 ½ cups breadcrumbs (Italian seasoned or plain)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Optional Dipping Sauce:

  • Marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or your favorite dip

 Instructions

1. Prepare the Cheese Sticks

  • If using string cheese, cut each stick in half. If using a block of mozzarella, cut it into 3-inch by ½-inch sticks.
  • Place the cheese sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for at least 1 hour. This prevents them from melting too quickly during frying.

2. Set Up the Breading Station

  • In one shallow bowl, place the flour.
  • In a second shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
  • In a third shallow bowl, mix breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese (if using), garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.

3. Bread the Cheese Sticks

  • Coat each frozen cheese stick in flour, shaking off the excess.
  • Dip it into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated.
  • Roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  • For an extra-crispy coating, repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps.

4. Freeze Again

  • Place the breaded cheese sticks back on the baking sheet and freeze for another 30 minutes. This helps the coating stay intact during frying.

5. Fry the Cheese Sticks

  • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or saucepan to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the cheese sticks in small batches for 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

6. Serve

  • Serve immediately with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or your favorite dip.

Tips

  • Freezing: Don’t skip the freezing steps; it’s essential to keep the cheese from oozing out while frying.
  • Baking Option: For a healthier version, bake the cheese sticks at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Use cooking spray to help them crisp up.
  • Air Fryer Option: Cook in a preheated air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 6-8 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
